About the Natural Materials Group

The Natural Materials Group is led by Dr Chris Holland in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield.

The group brings together researchers with a diverse set of backgrounds and interdisciplinary skills to better understand how Nature makes its materials, how they are used, how they evolved and what can we learn from them in making our own materials.

Natural materials have an important and interesting set of properties which have undergone hundreds of millions of years of research and design. As a result they are a unique source of inspiration for a wide range of today’s industrial and societal challenges, from sustainable materials to high performance fibres and biomedical implants.

Use the links above to find out more about what we can do.
